Norwich City have been promoted to the Championship after a dramatic 1-0 victory over Charlton - and are now just a whisker away from being crowned as League One champions.

The man who emerged as Norfolk's hero was a man called Nelson, with defender Michael's powerful header from a corner enough to secure the three points for the Canaries.

Almost a year on from the demoralising defeat at The Valley which condemned Norwich City to relegation last season, the South London ground was the scene of jubilation as Paul Lambert's team secured automatic promotion.

Norwich needed to win against Charlton and Swindon to drop points against Walsall to be sure of going up, after Millwall were beaten 1-0 by play-off rivals Huddersfield last night.

And they did just that, with goalkeeper Fraser Forster pulling off a number of superb saves to preserve Norwich's lead in the face of second half onslaught from Charlton, while Swindon were held 1-1 by Walsall.

The shock 3-2 defeat of second placed Leeds at the hands of Gillingham means the Canaries are just one point away from winning the title, with a superior goal difference to their rivals.

Thousands of Canary supporters, many of whom had travelled home disappointed at the 2-1 reversal at Leyton Orient in midweek, will face a much happier trip back to Norfolk tonight, after a tense match ended in victory.

And hundreds more thrilled fans watched the beam back of the game at Carrow Road, where the season started in the worst possible way with a 7-1 defeat at the hands of Colchester.

Angry supporters confronted then manager Bryan Gunn during that match and within a fortnight, Gunn had gone and Paul Lambert, who masterminded the Essex club's victory had become manager of the Canaries.

Since then the former Celtic midfielder has guided the Canaries to the top of League One, and fans will be hoping the club can hold onto him for next season's Championship campaign, where the derbies with old enemies Ipswich will resume.
