Locals have been left in uproar after a sculpture some say looks like a 'washing line' or 'children's play equipment', appeared in front of one of the town's most picturesque beauty spots.

The sculpture, called 'Flock', was commissioned as part of the Norfolk Way Art Trail - representing the Mere and members of the Diss community. 

However, the placement of the sculpture, which is next to the town sign, and its overall aesthetics have left the town divided.

Steve Harold said: "The piece of art is a marmite type of thing you either like or dislike it.

"It's not my cup of tea but my main gripe is where it was located - smack bang in the middle of the view over the main focal point in the town."

Mike Bardwell said: "It is in totally the wrong place and has ruined one of the most photographed places in the town."

However, others take a more appreciative view of the artwork, with photographers across the county capturing it on film.

Simon Wilkins, a photographer, said: "I actually have come to like it on its own merits - it was surprising to me how many were unaware that it is EU funded and planned well before the current financial crisis.

"Though I can sympathise with the view that the money could be better spent, it's worth remembering that its purpose is to encourage tourism to the area."

The Norfolk Way Art Trail is a £600,000 EU-funded project, aiming to get people visiting the county during the October to March off-season.

Denise Elyot, another Diss local, added: "I think it is awful, pointless and will certainly attract the wrong attention from kids, people going home from the pubs and pigeons."
