Video footage of the moments leading up to a motorcycle crash at a Norfolk airfield could be shown to a jury during an inquest into the victim's death.

Martin McConnell died in July last year during a speed event held at Tibenham Airfield in which members of the public attempted to reach 200mph.

Paramedics treated the 58-year-old military veteran following the tragic incident on the runway on July 23, 2023, but he died at the scene.

An inquest into his death is scheduled to take place in early 2025 and is expected to last for five days.

But a preliminary hearing held at Norfolk Coroner's Court on Wednesday heard that senior coroner Jacqueline Lake is considering using video footage from the event as part of the evidence.

The court heard that the tragedy was captured on dashcam by a car being driven alongside Mr McConnell's motorcycle - and by drone.

And footage from both could be permitted as evidence during the hearing, which will be carried out in front of a jury.

Mrs Lake said: "I am always reluctant to show video evidence when there are witness testimonies as once it is shown to the court it enters the public domain.

"My usual view is that there is no need for it to be shown."

However, the coroner said she would consider including the video following submissions from Mr McConnell's son and a legal representative of South Norfolk Council.

Jamie McConnell said: "The drone footage is not something I have seen but with regards to the dashcam video I think it could be relevant for the jury to be able to see how big the cones and barriers at the finish line were."

A further preliminary hearing is set to be held in November, at which Mrs Lake will decide whether or not the jury should see the footage.
