Otis the puppy from Diss receives life-saving surgery

Otis the cocker spaniel was just 12 weeks old when he was diagnosed with a rare heart condition called patent ductus arteriosus.

The ductus arteriosus vessel usually closes after birth but sometimes stays open.

More than half of affected puppies who go untreated die of heart failure before their first birthday.

Otis' owner, Tracey Keseru, is a dog breeder and owns 12 dogs herself.

When she spotted something was wrong with Otis, she took him to see the DWR Veterinary Specialists in Cambridgeshire.

She explained he had to undergo surgery and a "tough" four-week crate rest period but he is already back to being a "normal, healthy cocker spaniel".

"Otis is my little sidekick," Ms Keseru said. "It’s so nice to see him with an energy he didn’t have before and being able to play with my other dogs.

“I can’t thank the vets at DWR enough – what they do is fantastic and I couldn’t have asked for better treatment for Otis.

“It’s wonderful to see him celebrating his first birthday because it’s a milestone that I didn’t think he would reach.”

Laurent Locquet, the cardiology consultant who completed the operation, added: “Otis’ surgery was a complete success and we’re so pleased to see him back living life to the full with his family.”
