A town's library could be moving into a former day centre as part of a council's £83m project to make 200 buildings more energy efficient.

Norfolk County Council has applied to its own planning department for permission to temporarily move Diss Library from its current Church Street home while revamp work is done.

The council has identified part of the Denny Centre, in Thomas Manning Road, as a short-term home for the library while the present library is retrofitted.

The council wants permission to house the library in the Saffron Housing-owned building for 12 months.

A decision will be made in due course.

The major retrofitting project will see council-owned buildings, including libraries, fitted with heat pumps, to replace gas and oil boilers, while solar panels and better insulation will also be installed.

Officers at Conservative-controlled County Hall said the retrofitting scheme is needed to hit its target to reach 'net zero' status on its estate by the end of the decade.

The council recently agreed a similar move for the library in Gorleston, which will temporarily switch to a former hair salon.
