A controversial bid for 89 new homes has been approved despite a range of objections.

The application was submitted by Cripps Development Ltd to South Norfolk Council for the properties on 7.8 acres of land to the north of Spirketts Lane in Harleston.

The Beccles-based company proposed various properties including houses, flats, and bungalows, ranging from one to four bedrooms.

Members of the planning committee voted to authorise the assistant director of planning to approve the plans subject to conditions in February.

The application did receive objections, with neighbours raising concerns about the "traffic impact upon Spirketts Lane which also suffers from much through HGV traffic" and "pedestrian safety concerns for additional school children crossing".

One objecting comment said: “The infrastructure of the town won't cope with the increase in population”.

Harleston Town Council also objected to the original proposal and requested that necessary community infrastructure levy money - a charge levied on developers - should be given "to ensure that sufficient additional heath care provision is made" and "will be used to fund additional school places and facilities within the town".
