Relegation-threatened Diss Town showed they are not going to go down without a fight by recording a fine 1-0 win at Whitton United.

The Tangerines have been moored in the bottom three all season – despite brief runs of form which have given them some hope of preserving their Premier Division status. On Saturday Ben Lewis' strike secured a vital three points which rekindled the dream of pulling off the great escape once more.

Diss have six matches left to save themselves and sit nine points – realistically 10 when goal difference is taken into account – from safety.

Boss Mark Reeve seemed to allude on Twitter that his troops have a 'puncher's chance' of staying up – but that opportunity looks far more powerful now three more points have been added to their total.

At the other end of the table, Norwich United's ambition of winning the title seems unlikely to falter as they won 2-0 at Thetford Town. Matt Blake and Thomas Wright found the net for the Planters. The city side have a 14-point lead over nearest challengers Godmanchester Rovers – who beat fourth-from-bottom Wivenhoe Town, much to the delight of Diss – with both sides having 11 matches of the campaign to play.

Fakenham Town suffered a 3-1 home reverse to Brantham, Gorleston were beaten 2-0 at Mildenhall Town while Kirkley & Pakefield enjoyed a 4-2 triumph at Walsham-le-Willows.

In the First Division, Swaffham Town dropped to second as Long Melford won. But their quest to finish in the top three was strengthened by Great Yarmouth Town beating Saffron Walden Town 1-0.

Ricci Butler's Bloaters only needed a 22nd-minute strike from Connor Deeks to see off stuttering Saffron – who have now lost back-to-back games after going 24 matches previously without defeat.

If Yarmouth win their game in hand they will move to within two points of Walden, the club currently occupying the final promotion slot.

King's Lynn Town Reserves won 6-2 at Cornard United and sit seventh while Dereham Town's second string, 15th in the table, lost 2-0 at Haverhill Borough.
